The Central Texas pool care checklist.
The same routine our certified techs run across Greater Austin — tuned for Texas heat, storms, and hard water. Print it, stick it by the equipment pad, and your water stays blue.
Every week
- Skim the surface
Remove leaves, bugs, and debris before they sink and stain.
- Empty skimmer & pump baskets
Clogged baskets choke circulation — the #1 cause of cloudy water.
- Brush walls, steps & waterline
Breaks up algae before it blooms. Don't skip corners and steps.
- Vacuum the floor
Manual or robotic — get the debris your filter can't reach.
- Test & balance water
Chlorine 1–3 ppm · pH 7.4–7.6 · Alkalinity 80–120 ppm.
- Check water level
Keep it at the middle of the skimmer opening — Texas heat evaporates fast.
Every month
- Clean or backwash the filter
A dirty filter works harder and cleans worse.
- Test calcium hardness & CYA
Central Texas hard water creeps up — target 200–400 ppm calcium.
- Inspect equipment for leaks
Look for drips at the pump, unions, and around the heater.
- Deep-brush tile & waterline
Stops the calcium scale line our hard water loves to leave.
Every season
- Spring: open early (March)
Beat the algae — open before water passes 60°F.
- Summer: shock after storms & parties
Heavy rain and heavy swimming both deplete sanitizer.
- Fall: manage leaves aggressively
Tannins stain and feed algae. Skim daily during leaf drop.
- Winter: keep it running
Don't drain — circulate and balance through our mild winters.
